The Problem
The VPN market is saturated and dominated by a handful of household names, several of which offer core protection features for free. V3 VPN's challenge wasn't technical, it was psychological: convincing users to trust a newer name in a security critical category, and then convincing them to actually pay for a subscription when free alternatives from bigger companies were sitting right next to it on the App Store and Play Store.
The Approach
The target audience was clear and specific: privacy conscious "techies" who already understood what a VPN does and why it matters, alongside frequent travelers who regularly connect to public wifi and needed real protection, not just a checkbox feature. Design ownership covered the full product, not just visual screens, but influencing which features made it into the paid tier. The process ran over a two-week timeline, following the same research to final design structure used across the other projects.
The Solution
Trust, in a security product, often comes down to how the product feels, so the visual identity was deliberately built to feel different from the rest of the category:
Neon green, light grey, dark grey (near-black), and white - a sharp departure from the blues, purples, and heavy darks that dominate nearly every other VPN app, making V3 instantly recognizable and, counterintuitively, more trustworthy for standing apart from the pack
Direct input into the paid tier feature set, pushing for the addition of features like a kill switch and split tunneling to give paying users a tangible reason to upgrade
A UI with subtle, restrained animation - enough to feel alive and modern, without tipping into distracting or gimmicky
Recognizing that most users interact with a VPN through a single toggle, the home screen was designed to surface as many relevant controls and features as possible, keeping the entire product within one tap instead of buried behind menus
The Result
V3 VPN launched to over 10,000 users on Play Store, with additional growth on the App Store as well. More importantly for a trust-dependent product, user sentiment shifted, the app was perceived as more credible in a category where credibility is everything, and that trust translated into real conversion from free users to paying subscribers.
In a category this saturated, standing out visually isn't vanity, it's often the first and fastest signal a user has for deciding whether to trust you with their traffic.
